El Minya

Let me tell you, when in foreign countries, especially the Middle East, I hate getting into a taxi cab. I may be doing them a disjustice, but I just don't trust them, especially not at places like airports and train stations. There are way too many stories one hears. So, with that in mind, I walked from this train station as well, stubbornly, carrying my packs, knowing the general direction, but finally, after a long time, giving up. Away from the station and well into town toward the Nile, I flagged down a cab who had just discharged some passengers. I knew I was close, but he basically took me around two corners and there was the Eknaten Hotel and these ladies were manning the desk.

I knew I had chosen well, when I looked out the window. There was the Nile. This is the place that the rebellious Pharaoh Akhenaten took his wife Nefertiti (both modeled by me in Lightwave 3D, based on Egyptian busts) and had a new city built, centered around a new spin-off religion that broke ties with the ancient religious class centered in Luxor and Karnak. As you probably know, it did not go well. He was not a well man and died after just 17 years, leaving Nefertiti and young King Tut behind. Ultimately, the city of the sun that he had built here was completely razed, once power reverted back into the hands of the priests of Karnak.
